The Gables Durban Esplanade

The Gables in Durban was the authors home for ten years. Being the playground for South Africa it was the best place to retire once ones working life ended. Durbans tropical weather was more pleasurable than polar Cape Town - the only other retirement city considered. The Esplanade building faced the harbour with its massive container terminal reputed to be the largest in the Southern hemisphere, in its day. We witnessed the construction and further development of the vehicle terminal building and its resultant increase of vehicles being exported and imported - departing/arriving Durban by road and rail traffic. We witnessed the transformation of the old the old railway Workshop into a modern shopping center. The beach-front Marine Parade was also modernized during our stay in this Natal coastal resort city.
