This study of sectional liberalism involves an examination of liberal movements in the fields of politics, education, religion, race relations, industry, literature, journalism, and womens rights over a period of more than a century and a half. The history of the South is reviewed in four divisions: the era of Jefferson, the era of Calhoun, the period following reconstruction, and the South today.
