The Blessings of Liberty

Defining liberty as balance between freedom and security, the author speculates on the possibilities of the preservation of liberty and the Union. This is dependent on the subordination of commercial activities, sectional interests, and our varying social traditions to a common purpose -- one that transcends and conditions all citizens to a continuing operation of our democracy on the continental scale for which it was designed.
