Social Media: Its effect on depression and self esteem

Social media is used every day and used for many different reasons such as businesses, updating family members, keeping up with celebrities, etc. Although it allows us to feel more connected, there are also many downsides to social media such as high expectations, false lifestyles or pressure to conform or behave a certain way. How can this have an effect on ones well-being? More specifically, can social media increase depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem?
