The Healing Road: Meditations on Life in Medicine

Why are so many doctors miserable in their work? Where has that sense of joy and meaning gone that we had at the start of our careers? What is it like for patients and doctors when the best traditions of medicine are fully realized?

The path to reclaiming our love of medicine requires discovering our true professional heritage, reflecting on our own experiences, and reconnecting with our sense of wholeness. Walking this path becomes a pilgrimage of healing, both for ourselves and for our patients.

The Healing Road combines 40 years of medical practice with the wisdom of ancient faith traditions and contemporary writers, ethicists and spiritual leaders. These 50+ short essays explore our lives in medicine, the nature of healing, and our deep need for connection with our patients, our families, and ourselves. These timeless stories about the search for healing and connection hold meaning for both physicians and patients.
