T-72 - The Definitive Guide to the Soviet Workhorse explores the evolution of Soviet T-72 main battle tank design from start to finish. By drawing on an exceptional range of original Russian sources, this book offers a new, fresh and detailed look at a tank that continues to shape the battlefield today. Conceived as a formidable response to new Western tank designs and influenced by new requirements and design philosophies, the T-72 was equipped with a powerful cannon, formidable armor and good mobility. Following its introduction, the T-72 quickly emerged as a true workhorse in the Soviet arsenal. From its powerful 125 mm main gun, a revolutionary autoloader, over to new optics, a novel armor design and revised crew positions, this book delves into the engineering and technological developments that propelled the T-72 beyond its ambitious goals. Through a detailed examination of the planning and development, as well as the core design and engineering choices that made the T-72, discover how this tank became a cornerstone of Soviet military might.
