Smart Buildings by Design: How the Fourth Trade Connects It All with the Purdue Model

Smart buildings arent just about automation-theyre about integration. In todays world, HVAC, lighting, security, IT, fire alarm, and AV systems must work together seamlessly to support building performance, cybersecurity, and long-term operational goals. But too often, they remain isolated-leading to wasted energy, frustrated users, and costly retrofits.

Smart Buildings by Design: How the Fourth Trade Connects It All with the Purdue Model introduces a new mindset for building professionals: integration is its own discipline-the "Fourth Trade." Drawing on over 20 years of experience in building automation and operational technology (OT), Jacob Jackson presents a top-down strategy rooted in the Purdue Model that starts at the enterprise level and works down through IT, OT, and field-level systems.

This book provides practical tools and insights for engineers, contractors, architects, facility managers, and executives involved in new construction, renovations, or digital transformation efforts. Youll learn:

• How different building systems interact-and why they often conflict
• Where integration breaks down in real projects (and how to fix it)
• How to apply the Purdue Model in reverse to align technical design with business objectives
• Ways to reduce risk through standards like Division 25, BACnet, and structured network design
• How to make the business case for integration to decision-makers

Smart Buildings by Design is essential reading for anyone responsible for creating intelligent, connected, and future-ready buildings. Whether youre struggling with siloed systems or planning a next-generation facility, this book will help you build with clarity, strategy, and confidence-from Day One.
