The Southern Song Dynasty: A History of China

In 1127, the Jingkang Incident shattered the Northern Song. The Jurchen-led Jin captured Emperors Huizong and Qinzong, occupied the old political heartland, and left a young prince named Zhao Gou to become the center of an extraordinary dynastic survival story.

The Southern Song Dynasty: A History of China - Part One follows the Southern Song from its dangerous beginnings under Emperor Gaozong through decades of war, court politics, fragile peace, and struggles over succession. The story moves across Kaifeng, the Central Plains, Sichuan, the Yangtze region, and the Southern Song court, where military survival and political calculation were rarely far apart.

Along the way appear some of the periods most memorable figures: Han Shizhong and Liang Hongyu, the brothers Wu Jie and Wu Lin, Liu Qi, the celebrated general Yue Fei, the powerful chancellor Qin Hui, Emperor Xiaozong, Emperor Guangzong, and the formidable Empress Li Fengniang. The Jin-Song wars, the struggle between peace and recovery of the north, tensions between generals and scholar-officials, and the Shaoxi Abdication all reveal a dynasty repeatedly forced to decide what survival was worth.

Written as accessible narrative history, the book explains complicated politics without turning them into a lecture and keeps the human choices behind wars, treaties, rivalries, and court intrigue firmly in view.

For readers curious about medieval China, the Song Dynasty, and the long confrontation between the Southern Song and Jin, this is a story of survival shaped as much by people and politics as by armies.
