This volume brings together three of Herman Melvilles early works, often referred to as his "South Seas" romances. Typee (1846) is a semi-autobiographical account of Melvilles experiences living among the native peoples of the Marquesas Islands, exploring themes of civilization and savagery. Omoo (1847), a sequel to Typee, continues Melvilles Pacific adventures as he deserts a whaling ship and finds himself involved with mutineers and missionaries in Tahiti. Mardi (1849) shifts into allegorical fiction, moving beyond realism into a philosophical exploration of politics, religion, and human nature.
