First published by the New Zealand Government Printer in 1924, the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Roll of Honour 1914-1918 is an authoritative official record of New Zealand servicemen who died during, or as a consequence of, the Great War. An important primary source for military historians, genealogists and medal researchers, it provides extensive nominal and service information unavailable in a conventional narrative history. The Roll is arranged in three sections. The first records 16,697 personnel who died on active service overseas, whether killed in action or from wounds or disease. Entries give service number, rank, name, unit, date and circumstances of death, together with the theatre of operations. The second section lists 964 former members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who died after discharge from wounds received or disease contracted on active service. Entries provide service number, rank, name, unit and date of death. The third section records 505 personnel who died through accident or disease while training with, or attached to, the NZEF in New Zealand, giving service number, rank, name and date of death. Together, these three sections form an invaluable official memorial and substantial reference source for the study of New Zealands wartime service and sacrifice.
