Nations of the World: France

Nations of the World presents a sweeping 19th-century survey of global civilizations, viewed through the lens of political evolution, cultural identity, and moral progress. Drawing from history, philosophy, and statesmanship, this work examines the rise and development of nations from antiquity to the modern era. With a focus on Europe yet aware of broader currents, Guizot explores the forces-religion, governance, law-that shape national character and historical destiny.

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot (1787-1874) was a French historian, orator, and a dominant figure in French politics prior to the Revolution of 1848. Afterward, he turned to literature, including this 8 volume work, Histoire de France racontée à mes petits enfants, which he completed through 1789, and was continued to 1870 by his daughter Madame Guizot de Witt from her fathers notes.
