Research-based Writing Instruction

In an innovative mixed-methods, action research study, Dr. Brimi explores the effect of research- based writing instruction on the intrinsic motivation of extrinsically-motivated students. Brimis work demonstrates how ten simple principles for teaching composition can positively affect the attitudes and performance of high school students. Brimis research utilizes survey data, focus group commentaries, and document analysis to capture the experience of students who pursue high marks in school, but who typically do not enjoy writing. After four months of instruction guided by Brimis principles, the students find writing both relevant and enjoyable.
