Kharg and the Hidden Heart of Irans Oil Empire

Kharg and the Hidden Heart of Irans Oil Empire tells the remarkable story of a small coral island in the northern Persian Gulf that quietly became one of the most strategically important energy hubs on Earth. What began as a remote outpost visited by ancient mariners and medieval traders evolved over centuries into the principal gateway for Irans petroleum exports, handling roughly 90 percent of the countrys crude oil shipments to global markets.

This book traces Kharg Islands journey from early human footprints and mercantile stops through European competition, centuries of obscurity, and dramatic transformation with the rise of Irans modern oil industry. It explores how geopolitical struggle, nationalization, war, sanctions, and global energy transitions have shaped the islands identity and exposed its vulnerabilities. Along the way, readers learn how pipelines from inland and offshore fields converge on Kharg, how massive storage tanks and supertanker jetties were built, and why military planners view the island as a potential fulcrum in conflict.

From brutal attacks during the Iran-Iraq War and the 2026 Persian Gulf conflict to efforts to rebuild and modernize its oil lifeline under sanctions, Kharg Island has endured as both economic engine and geopolitical lightning rod. In an era of global energy transition and shifting power balances, this deeply researched narrative reveals how geography, resources, and human ambition transformed an unremarkable island into a center of global power-and why its future remains pivotal to the Middle East and the world.
